چکیده

Several recent reviews in the medical literature maintain that only heterozygous G6PD deficient females are relatively protected against falciparum malaria. However, a number of population studies pro-vide compelling evidence that both the hemizygous G6PD deficient male and homozygous G6PD deficient female are also relatively protected against falciparum parasitization. An epidemiologic critique of a sample of these field investigations points out the methodological problems that un-derlie some of the negative findings. In vitro studies also provide compelling evidence that erythrocytes from all G6PD deficient genotypes are relatively protected against falciparum infestation, and that this protection is enhanced by oxidant substances derived from a number of food crops such as

X-Linked G6PD Deficiency Protects Hemizygous Males but Not Heterozygous Females against Severe Malaria

BACKGROUND Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) is important in the control of oxidant stress in erythrocytes, the host cells for Plasmodium falciparum. Mutations in this enzyme produce X-linked deficiency states associated with protection against malaria, notably in Africa where the A- form of G6PD deficiency is widespread. Some reports have proposed that heterozygous females with mosaic p...

The Impact of Phenotypic and Genotypic G6PD Deficiency on Risk of Plasmodium vivax Infection: A Case-Control Study amongst Afghan Refugees in Pakistan

BACKGROUND The most common form of malaria outside Africa, Plasmodium vivax, is more difficult to control than P. falciparum because of the latent liver hypnozoite stage, which causes multiple relapses and provides an infectious reservoir. The African (A-) G6PD (glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase) deficiency confers partial protection against severe P. falciparum. Recent evidence suggests that t...

Prevalence and hematological indicators of G6PD deficiency in malaria-infected patients

BACKGROUND This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence and alteration of hematological parameters in malaria patients with a glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency, in the western region of Thailand, an endemic region for malaria. METHODS Data about patients with malaria hospitalized between 2013 and 2015 were collected. Clinical and sociodemographic characteristics such as age a...

Polymorphism analysis of malaria susceptibility biomarkers in G6PD deficiency patients

Abstract   Background: Several studies suggested that some traits and polymorphisms in human genome such as G6PD deficiency and other genes have protective effects on susceptibility to malaria infection .   Methods: In present study we investigated the prevalence of TNF [1] -244GgA, TNF [1] -   308 GgA,TNF [1] -238GgA, NOS2-954GgC, MBL54GgA, MBL 57GgA, MBL IVSI -   5 GgA polymorphisms and G6P...

Early phagocytosis of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD)-deficient erythrocytes parasitized by Plasmodium falciparum may explain malaria protection in G6PD deficiency.

In population-based studies it has been established that inherited deficiency of erythrocyte (E) glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) confers protection against severe Plasmodium falciparum (P falciparum) malaria. Impaired growth of parasites in G6PD-deficient E in vitro has been reported in some studies, but not in others. In a systematic analysis, we have found that with five different st...
